St Andrews Church

The church that once stood in Ashley Place: St Andrews New Church, designed by Gilbert Scott was pulled down soon after Westminster Cathedral was built and shut off its skyline. Some things never change.

There was a temporary church in Palmer’s Village and it was decided to transfer the church to a new location and build on a scale more worthy of its position. The scheme was supported by the Church Commissioners, the Bishop’s Fund and the Dean and Chapter, but ‘sums supplied by the public but were moderate’. This led to a more humble design.
